PM Malcom Turnbull Announces Stricter Visa Requirements For Skilled Foreign Workers

On April 18, Australia's Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull announced that the country will be introducing stricter visa requirements for skilled foreign workers. PM Turnbull said that the focus is to ensure that Australian jobs are "given to Australians first."

The current 4-year work visa program, i.e., 457 visa program (the most commonly used program for Australian or overseas employers to sponsor skilled overseas workers to work in Australia temporarily), will be abolished and replaced by two temporary visas that carry additional obstacles.

Some of the changes require English proficiency, increase in application fees, subjection to labor market testing, and additional barriers to permanent migration after the work visa expires. Notably, people currently holding a 457 visa will not be affected.
