Bharat Vasani out in the open again; welcomes opportunities


Bharat Vasani, Tata Sons Former General Counsel (GC) who was presently serving as a Legal Advisor to Tata Group Chairman, Tata Sons Ltd has decided to retire from his professional career. He will be retiring from January 31, 2018.

Vasani is going on a brief sabbatical of a month after which he will be resuming as a private practitioner. So also, he will be continuing his lectureship at Mumbai law schools, colleges and professional bodies, and would also continue to be spending time on academics in the future.

“I am certainly going to be spending quality time with my family after a legal career of 39 years,” said Vasani. He added, “I am satisfied that I had a great innings at the TATA Group and moving on with good memories.”

Bharat Vasani has over 30 years of experience at the senior management level in the corporate legal industry. In his career span, he specialized in mergers & acquisitions (both domestic and cross-border), corporate restructuring, JVs, foreign collaborations, divestments, major commercial contracts, civil and criminal litigation, property matters, and all legal and regulatory issues.

He also has extensive expertise on foreign investment and FEMA Regulations for both in-bound and out-bound investments. Moreover, he has extensive experience in handling complex commercial negotiations and has sound domain knowledge of various corporate laws.

Vasani had joined Tata in 2000, in which time the legal function at all Tata companies has grown to more than 450 people across the world.

Tata Consulting Services (TCS) had the biggest legal team at around 110, while Tata Motors and Tata Steel each had around 40 lawyers, while Tata Power companies also included a large number of lawyers, as stated by him.

As a part of the Tata Group, Bharat Vasani has won as the In-House Legal Team for Innovation, Strategies & Continuous Growth in 2014-2015 and Leadership Excellence Award For Continuous Growth: In-House in 2016-2017 at the Legal Era Awards.

Bharat is certainly a Knowledge Bank and loves teaching. In his career, he has handled more than 300 heavy transactions at the TATA Group says his peers in the industry.
