Data ownership recommendation be given by TRAI

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is planning to issue suggestions on guidelines for data privacy, security and ownership by January 2018. The telecom regulator is also in the final stages of issuing recommendations on net neutrality.

According to TRAI Chairman RS Sharma, “Currently, there is a huge amount of monopoly and that monopoly is becoming bigger and bigger. We are saying you can use my data because we are using your application, but give us too so that we can use it for other purposes too. This should be finalized by December-January.”

“The clarity on data ownership and privacy will help many start-ups in developing new applications, which at present are unable to do so because of monopoly on controlling data of consumers,” the TRAI chief observed.

The telecom regulator plans to issue recommendations on data ownership, privacy and security in telecom sector by the year end or January next year, while it is in the final phases of issuing recommendations on net neutrality, a top official said.

“We are also planning to bring out recommendations on next spectrum auctions, within this financial year, even as operators have sought for more time to submit their views. Usually operators ask for weeks, this time they've asked for months, we won't be giving them extensions indefinitely," Sharma added.
