The News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA) has appointed former Supreme Court judge, Justice A K Sikri, as its chairperson.
He has succeeded Justice R V Raveendran, whose term ends on May 25, according to a release issued recently.
News Broadcasters Association (NBA) President Rajat Sharma mentioned in his statement that Justice Sikri's vast experience in the judiciary would definitely strengthen self regulation.
Incidentally, the News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA) is an independent body set up by the News Broadcasters Association (NBA). The NBSA’s task is to consider and adjudicate upon complaints about television news broadcasts.
The NBA is an industry association of private news television broadcasters of India which was established in October 2008.
“The NBSA is an independent body, which is free from any interference from the NBA,” Sharma’s statement stated.
As a Supreme Court judge, Justice Sikri has pronounced several verdicts related to human rights.
These verdicts were delivered in cases related to transgenders, legal status for the third gender, and euthanasia (passive euthanasia for patients in a permanent vegetative state).
He has also delivered other important verdicts in cases related to child trafficking, child labor, juvenile delinquents, compensating those with disabilities, besides several others.
