New Measures Announced To Tackle Serious Violence

A range of innovative new measures have been set out by the Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, to address violent crime in the UK.

They build on the Serious Violence Strategy published in April which brought together partners across sectors to form a multi-agency response.

The new measures include: strengthening of a public health approach towards tackling serious violence; new youth endowment fund of £200; and an independent review of drug misuse

On reinforcing a public health approach towards tackling serious violence, local authorities, police officers, education partners and healthcare professionals will have a new, statutory duty to take action against and prevent violent crime.

On the new youth endowment fund, it will be aimed at 10 to 14 year olds, especially those showing signs of truancy, aggression and involvement in anti-social behavior.

On the drug misuse review, it will look at recreational drug use and drug users causing the most harm to themselves and their communities.

At the heart of the Serious Violence Strategy is dealing with the root causes of serious violence, especially preventing young people from getting involved in criminality of any kind.
