Pravin Anand

Pravin Anand, Managing Partner, Anand and Anand, has emerged an IP trailblazer in his career spanning more than four decades. From Christian Louboutin to Cartier, pharma to tech majors to policymakers and art to entertainment, Pravin today represents the world’s most famous brands, industries and personalities who rely on his expertise for the protection of their Intellectual Property.

The more recent among the notable cases he has fought include: InterDigital vs Xiaomi – India’s first anti-suit injunction; Ferid Allani– made way for software patenting in India; Merck and Hermes – social damages for IP violations; Pioneer Overseas Corporation – DNA testing for disputed IPR in plant variety; Philips vs Amazestores–landmark judgment on aggravated damages for IP infringers; Philips vs Rajesh Bansal- India's first post-trial SEP judgment; Merck vs Glenmark – first patent law suit to be decided in the plaintiff’s favour post trial under the Patents Act; pharmaceutical patent cases like AstraZeneca, BMS, Eisai Co. Ltd. – answered complicated questions on genus and species patents.

Pravin has contributed to a majority of damages law suits in IP litigation in India, which includes the largest damages in a patent and trademark suit. He set a record in IP damages with the Merck tree order where the defendant had to plant140,000 trees in pollution-stricken Delhi. Close on the heels of Merck came the Hermes case where the defendant had to provide wholesome meals to underprivileged children and sanitary napkins to ten orphanages and foster care homes for two years.

Pravin invests considerably in IP infrastructure to solve his clients’ problems and grow IP index. His pioneering initiatives include: an IP board game; India’s first IP-themed play ‘Brainchild’; an IP comic ‘Adventures of Mr. IP’; and a coffee table book ‘Iponomics’.

Pravin has co-authored ‘Halsbury’s Laws of India on Intellectual Property’ and regularly contributes to the Life Sciences Review, IP Review and Bloomberg BNA's Life Sciences Global Guide. He serves on the editorial boards of CTLR, PLC - Life Sciences, Asia IP and Patent Lawyer and is a regular speaker at WIPO and MIP- International Patent Forum among others. He has served as the President of Indian groups such as AIPPI, APAA and FICPI and holds an INTA Board membership. Pravin studied law at Delhi University. He was called to the Bar in 1979 and has been practising as an IP lawyer ever since.

The first Indian practitioner to receive the ‘AIPPI Award of Merit’, Pravin has been consistently recognised by leading publications for his work in the field of IP. He has been recognized as the WTR Global Leader 2019 & 2020 and inducted in the Legal 500 ‘Hall of Fame’ 2020.
