Central Government Appoints New Chief Justices for Four High Courts

The Government of India has officially announced the appointment of new Chief Justices for four High Courts: Kerala, Orissa, Telangana, and Gujarat.

Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Federal Minister of State for Law and Justice, took to Twitter to announce the significant development regarding the appointments.

“In exercise of power conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint the following High Court Judges as Chief Justices of High Courts and transfer of a High Court Judge…” Minister Meghwal wrote on his official Twitter handle.

Among the High Court Judges promoted as Chief Justices include Justices Alok Aradhe, Subhasis Talapatra, Sunit Agarwal, and Ashish J Desai, while Justice P Sam Koshy is the lone High Court Judge who has been transferred from Chhattisgarh High Court to Telangana High Court.

Justice Alok Aradhe, a Karnataka High Court Judge, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, Justice Subhasis Talapatra, who serves on the Orissa High Court, will assume the role of Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court following the retirement of the present Chief Justice S Muralidhar on August 7, 2023, Justice Sunita Agarwal, a Judge of the Allahabad High Court, has been cleared for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, and Justice Ashish J Desai, currently serving as the acting Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.

On July 5, the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and consisting of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sanjeev Khanna, recommended the appointment of the mentioned Judges as the Chief Justices of the respective High Courts.
