The leading law firm in India, DSK Legal, represented Mr. Karan Johar in a suit before the Bombay City Civil Court seeking injunctive and other reliefs against Ajey Nagar (Carry Minati) and other defendants in relation to various impugned videos circulating on social media platforms.

Background of the dispute

Mr. Karan Johar filed the suit (Short Cause Suit (L) No. 1841 of 2026) in the Bombay City Civil Court at Bombay against Ajey Nagar & Others. The suit pertained to impugned videos uploaded on Defendant No. 1 (Ajey Nagar/Carry Minati) Instagram account “carryminati” on the platform owned by Defendant No. 6 (Meta Platforms, Inc.) and YouTube Channel “@CarryMinati” on the platform owned by Defendant No. 7 (Google LLC), which allegedly defamed Mr. Karan Johar.

The impugned videos were produced by Defendant Nos. 2 to 5—Deepak Char, Akshay Gajra, One Hand Clap Media Pvt Ltd, and Poptech Growth Private Limited—and were further circulated or re-posted by third parties including Defendant No. 8 (Ashok Kumar/John Doe) on Instagram.

Court prima facie findings on defamatory content

After hearing the parties for ad-interim reliefs, the Hon’ble Court prima facie found that Defendant No. 1 (Ajey Nagar/Carry Minati) and Defendant No. 2 (Deepak Char) made defamatory statements and used vulgar language vide the Impugned Videos against the Plaintiff.

Ad-interim injunction order

The Hon’ble Court noted that the Impugned Videos have to be taken down and there should be an injunction against all those who circulate or re-circulate the Impugned Videos on social media platforms. As such, the Hon’ble Court was pleased to pass an ad-interim injunction order temporarily restraining Defendant Nos. 1–5 (i.e., Ajey Nagar/Carry Minati, Deepak Char, Akshay Gajra, One Hand Clap Media Pvt Ltd, Poptech Growth Private Limited) and Defendant No. 8 from making, uploading videos, posting, re-posting, giving interviews, corresponding, communicating, uploading, printing, publishing, re-publishing, hosting, circulating or re-circulating any further defamatory / slanderous content or making any further defamatory content, derogatory remarks, posts, messages, tweets, videos, interviews or communications in relation to the Plaintiff on any social media platforms till the decision of the notice of motion.

Direction to social media platform

The Hon’ble Court was pleased to direct Defendant No. 6 to take down the third-party videos of the Impugned Videos or part thereof (which were mentioned in the suit filed by Mr. Karan Johar) as available on the social media platform, Instagram owned and operated by Defendant No. 6.

Legal representation

For the Plaintiff, DSK Legal team appeared through Mr. Parag Khandhar (Partner), Ms. Chandrima Mitra (Partner), Ms. Anaheeta Verma, and Ms. Pratyusha Dhodda.

The Plaintiff’s team also included Ms. Rakhee Bajpai Tiwari from Karan Johar’s team and external counsel Mr. P.D. Gandhy.
