Supreme Court Collegium: Reiterates Recommendations on Elevation of Advocates as Judges to High Courts

The Supreme Court of India (SC) Collegium in a meeting convened on 2 March 2021, has on reconsideration, resolved to reiterate its earlier recommendations for the elevation of the Advocates as Judges in the High Courts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Himachal Pradesh.

The SC collegium recommended Advocate Viju Abraham, Mohammed Nias C.P, and Paul KK for elevation to the Kerala High Court, Advocate Nagendra Ramachandra Naik to the Karnataka High Court, and Satyen Vaidya to the Himachal Pradesh High Court.

The Top Court on 9 October 2018, recommended for the elevation of Advocate Viju Abraham and six other Advocates of the Kerala High Court. Advocate Viju Abraham's case was deferred for consideration at a later date.

Again on 12 February 2019, Abraham's case was deferred by the SC Collegium and it had called for certain information from the High Court. Based on the information received the Apex Court Collegium recommended Abraham's appointment in May 2019.

The SC collegium in March 2019, recommended Mohammed Nias C.P and Paul KK to be appointed as Judges of the Kerala High Court, along with CS Dias, whose appointment was confirmed in November 2019.

The collegium further recommended the appointment of Advocate Nagendra Ramachandra Naik as Judge for the Karnataka High Court. In October 2019, Naik had first been recommended for the position by the SC Collegium.

In April 2019, Advocate Satyen Vaidya, who was earlier proposed for elevation as a Himachal Pradesh High Court Judge has also been recommended again by the collegium.

The SC Collegium further approved the proposal of elevation of the judicial officer A Badharudeen as Judge of the Kerala High Court.
