Supreme Court Collegium undergoes several changes; Justice DY Chandrachud inducted intothe Collegium

Apart from the previous members of the Supreme Court Collegium (SC collegium) Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Justices DY Chandrachud, Rohinton Nariman, UU Lalit, and AM Khanwilkar, are the new members of the SC collegium. With CJI SA Bobde's retirement, Justice DY Chandrachud will join the SC Collegium.

After the retirement of CJI SA Bobde and the demise of Justice Mohan M Shantanagoudar, the SC Collegium has undergone several new changes in its composition.

The collegium system has been designed by the judges themselves, to appoint other judges of the Supreme Court and transfer High Court Judges.

The latest new entrants of the SC collegium include Justice DY Chandrachud and the Collegium will be headed by CJI NV Ramana. Justice Nariman is set to retire on 12 August 2021 and Justice L Nageswara Rao will take his place. Justice Rao's retirement is pending on 7 June 2022 and Justice Kaul shall be inducted to the SC collegium after Justice Rao's retirement.

After the demise of Justice Shantanagoudar, Justice Nazeer will take his place in the order of seniority and enter the Collegium on 30 July 2022 after Justice Khanwilkar's retirement.

On 26 August 2022, Justice Ramana will get retire and Justice UU Lalit will become the next Chief Justice of India.

Justices Chandrachud, Kaul, Nazeer, and Indira Banerjee will be part of the Collegium headed by Justice Lalit. After Justice Banerjee's retirement in September 2022, Justice KM Joseph will be inducted into the Collegium.

When Justice Lalit will get retire on 9 November 2022, Justice DY Chandrachud will become the 50th Chief Justice of India. Justice Chandrachud will have one of the longest tenures as CJI.
