Supreme Court Reserves Order In Coal Scam Case

After Senior Advocate RS Cheema who is the present Special Public Prosecutors (SPP) expressed his desire to be relieved from the role. The Union Government proposed the names of Senior Advocate Maninder Singh and Rajesh Batra be appointed as SPP in cases registered by Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Coal scam.

The Supreme Court (SC) bench comprising of Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde, and Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubhramaniam stated that they had the names of Advocates Satish Tamta and DP Singh in mind.

In 2014 the Apex Court had quashed 214 coal blocks allocated by the Union between 1993 and 2010. The order was passed on receiving public interest litigation filed by Advocate ML Sharma and NGO Common Cause and had ordered trial by a special CBI Judge.

The CJI thereafter added that Advocate DP Singh is appearing for ED in the Augusta Westland case and other ones.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing on behalf of the petitioner- NGO Common Cause, said that the SC bench should consider the names suggested by Senior Advocate RS Cheema.

CJI remarked stating Senior Advocate Maninder Singh had resigned from the post of Additional Solicitor General and that DP Singh was on the other hand appearing for the Enforcement Directorate in some cases.

The Top Court has reserved its order in the said matter.
