For the first time in the Supreme Court's 70-year-old history, nine judges took the oath of office at one go, taking the working strength of the SC up to 33 on Tuesday. The sanctioned strength of the top court is 34.
With this move, the number of vacancies in the apex court has come down from 10 to 1. The nine new Judges sworn in by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana are: Justices Abhay Shreeniwas Oka, Vikram Nath, Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Hima Kohli, BV Nagarathna, CT Ravikumar, MM Sundresh, Bela Trivedi and PS Narsimha.
After the Collegium on August 17 recommended the names of the nine Judges for elevation to the Supreme Court, the central government approved the same on August 26.
