Amazon and Canon join forces in fake goods lawsuit

Amazon and camera manufacturer Canon have formed a partnership to take legal action against 29 sellers who have been involved in the sale of counterfeit Canon camera batteries and chargers on Amazon's US store.

The renowned brands initiated a lawsuit in the US District Court for the Western District of Washington, alleging infringement of Canon's trademark rights.

Canon expressed concern over the rise in sales of counterfeit goods in tandem with the expansion of the e-commerce market. In an effort to combat counterfeiting and safeguard the interests of their customers, Canon and Amazon have joined forces. This collaborative lawsuit serves as a testament to their joint commitment to address the issue of counterfeiting.

A significant number of Canon cameras, as well as their associated accessories, chargers, and batteries, are available for sale on Amazon. Canon emphasised its proactive approach in combating counterfeiters worldwide, aiming to safeguard customers from fake and potentially hazardous products that unlawfully exploit the Canon brand name.

This pursuit not only ensures the protection of Canon's trusted reputation but also upholds the value and loyalty associated with the brand, built over decades of delivering high-quality, safe, and dependable products.

Amazon expressed its alignment with Canon's dedication to tackling the pervasive issue of counterfeiting across the industry. The e-commerce giant underscored its satisfaction in collaborating with the esteemed and iconic camera brand in this joint effort.

Canon has enrolled in the Amazon Brand Registry and Project Zero, two brand protection tools that have proven instrumental in assisting both Canon and Amazon in identifying counterfeit products within the Amazon store. These tools have played a significant role in enhancing their ability to combat counterfeiting and maintain the integrity of the marketplace.

Over the previous year, Amazon's Counterfeit Crimes Unit has taken legal action or referred for investigation more than 1,300 individuals involved in counterfeiting activities across the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and China.

Furthermore, Amazon has successfully seized and properly disposed of over 6 million counterfeit products, effectively thwarting any possibility of them reentering the supply chain for resale.
