DLA Piper Advised Hyundai Rotem on Significant Australian Train Project

DLA Piper has announced its role as the legal advisor to the South Korean company Hyundai Rotem Company in achieving a successful contract close on the Queensland Train Manufacturing Programme (QTMP) with the Queensland Government. The QTMP represents the largest rollingstock project in Queensland to date.

The Downer-led consortium, comprising John Holland and DT Infrastructure, was chosen as the preferred bidder in February 2023 and successfully achieved a contract closed on June 29, 2023.

Hyundai Rotem Company, in collaboration with joint venture partner Downer, will serve as the Rollingstock subcontractor and share responsibility for the design, manufacturing, and commissioning of 65 passenger trains, intended for use on the South East Queensland rail network. The manufacturing of these trains will take place at a specially-built facility in Torbanlea, near Maryborough, owned by the state. Additionally, a new purpose-built rail maintenance facility at Ormeau in the Gold Coast region will be responsible for the trains’ maintenance.

“We were pleased to advise Hyundai Rotem Company on such a significant public infrastructure project, which will bring skills and jobs to the people of Queensland,” said Jonathan Stafford, Partner, DLA Piper.

The DLA Piper team, spearheading this project, was expertly led by Jonathan Stafford, Partner in Finance, Projects & Restructuring. Assisting him were Halima Ansari, Solicitor in Finance, Projects & Restructuring, and Jackson Tree, Senior Associate in Finance, Projects & Restructuring.

“This significant mandate was a strong demonstration of our capacity to navigate complex infrastructure projects,” Jonathan Stafford added.
