Oon & Bazul appoints Ma HanFeng as Partner to set up Tax Practice

He was earlier a government lawyer at the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore

Ma HanFeng has joined Oon & Bazul LLP to head its newly launched Tax Practice.

HanFeng’s expertise spans the entire spectrum of taxation laws. He advises on a broad range of cross-border and domestic tax issues spanning multiple industries, covering tax advisory services, including corporate income tax, personal income tax, property tax, stamp duty, and Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Commenting on the expansion, Bazul Ashhab, the managing partner at Oon & Bazul stated, “We are excited to launch our new practice area and welcome HanFeng to our esteemed team. This expansion is a testament to our commitment to meeting the diverse needs of our clients in this ever-evolving global economy and providing exceptional legal solutions”.

He added, “With the strengthening of the trade and business relationship between India and Singapore, it is inevitable that Indian companies will have to confront cross-border taxation issues concerning both India and Singapore. With the launch of our new tax practice, our firm is now well-placed to assist Indian companies in navigating the complexities of such cross-border taxation issues.”

A 2009 graduate of the National University of Singapore, HanFeng has over a decade of experience as a government lawyer. His expertise extends to cross-border taxation, a vital issue for Indian companies that have operations in both Singapore and India.

In an increasingly globalized world, companies encounter issues concerning double taxation on income due to varied corporate income tax rules applied by different jurisdictions. Thus, to resolve such issues, it is critical for law firms to consider not only domestic tax legislation but also the application of international tax treaties.

The tax practice also deals with disputes including advance rulings, voluntary disclosure, support for audit/investigations, civil tax and criminal tax litigation, assistance on Advance Pricing Arrangements (APA), and Assistance on Mutual Agreement Procedure (MAP). This could include Mandatory Binding Arbitration (MBA) procedures provided in some international tax treaties and support for Exchange of Information (EOI) requests.

Due to the shifting of affluence trends towards the region, there’s an increasing demand for specialized expertise and the formation of tax practice represents Oon & Bazul’s commitment to continually enhance its offerings and stay ahead in an ever-evolving legal landscape.
