German Government proposes new Self-declaration law to legally change gender status.

Federal Minister of Justice Dr. Marco Buschmann said "the time for a self-determination law is long overdue for Germany."

The German Government recently unveiled plans to make it easier for transgender people to effortlessly change their name and gender legally, as opposed to the current hassled regime.

The Family Affairs Minister Lisa Paus announced the move on behalf of the Government at a press conference in Berlin.

According to the present law 'transexual law', any person who wishes to change their name and gender legally is required to go to court and provide two expert reports usually from psychotherapists. This law has been in effect for 40 years in Germany.

On the other hand, under the newly proposed 'Self-determination law', an adult can go to the local registry office and declare the change. Children aged 14 or above will also be allowed with the permission of their parents or guardian.

Minister Paus commented on the proposed law:

"The transsexual law dates from 1980 and is degrading for those affected. We will finally abolish it and replace it with a modern self-determination law. Today is therefore a good day for freedom and diversity in our country. The Self-Determination Act will improve life for transgender people and recognize gender diversity."

Currently, several European countries such as Denmark, Switzerland, and Belgium already allow legal gender status to be changed through self-declaration.
