In 1992, he was designated as Senior Advocate. In the initial stage of his career, he was practising as an Additional Solicitor General of India and later practised as a private Senior Counsel. Some of his landmark cases include Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty (AIR 1983 SC 473), Right to Education, Reservation, Nature of Federal Jurisdiction, Banning of Lottery etc which have been important cases under Constitutional Law.
Apart from professional associations, Vaidyanathan also has interest in music and dance, and reveals his association with institutions propagating music and dance (Gandharva Maha Vidyalaya) and education (Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan).

Legal Era: Please share with us your journey as a lawyer? Was law always your desired profession?
C S Vaidyanathan: When I was 15, doing my first year of graduation in Science (B.Sc), I decided Science and Engineering was not my career choice and decided to do law after my B.Sc. However, I could not enrol immediately after graduation in law since I was less than 20 and the minimum age for enrolment was 21. I joined as a Senior Management trainee in the then DCM Group of Companies and had exposure in different areas of management. However, after about 4 years in corporate environment, I made a conscious and informed choice to join the legal profession which I did in 1974 in Madras, as it then was. I shifted to Delhi in 1979 with my senior Mr. K.K. Venugopal, Senior Advocate and became an Advocate-on-Record in Supreme Court in 1979, I was designated as Senior Advocate in 1992. I have been mostly in private practice as a Senior Counsel, though for a brief period of a year and a half I was the First Additional Solicitor General of India.
