Anticipatory bail has been granted to former chief minister Raman Singh’s son-in-law Dr Puneet Gupta, former minister Rajesh Munat and BJP leader Maturam Pawar in connection with the alleged 2014 Antagarh bypoll fixing By the Chhattisgarh High Court.
Separate pleas seeking pre-arrest bail had been filed by the three accused. Justice Goutam Bhaduri was hearing the pleas. A case had been lodged against Gupta, Munat and Pawar on February 3 by the in response to a complaint by Congress leader Kiranmayee Nayak, said Additional Advocate General Satishchandra Verma.
The lawyers of the petitioners argued that the FIR was lodged four years after the incident on the basis of weak evidence and was political vendetta.
The court granted them anticipatory bail after hearing the arguments.
An audio CD surfaced in 2015-16, The conversations recorded in whichsuggested that there was a deal to make Maturam Pawar, Congress candidate in the 2014 Antagarh Assembly by-election, withdraw at the last minute to help the BJP nominee win. BJP’s Bhojraj Nag won the by-election.
The CD suggested that the withdrawal of Pawar a day before the last date for withdrawal was at the behest of the BJP and facilitated by former chief minister Ajit Jogi.
