The Delhi High Court on May 25 has exempted lawyers from wearing coats, gowns, sherwanis, achkans, chapkans and jackets while attending virtual hearings before it and district courts during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Court by an administrative order stated that the lawyers should be dressed in a sober and dignified manner.
The circular stated, “However, they shall be dressed in a sober and dignified manner and expected to adhere to the rest of the Dress Code, as prescribed in Part VI, Chapter IV of the Bar Council of India Rules (Rules framed under Section 49(1) (gg) of the Advocates Act, 1961).”
This decision has been taken to contain the further spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court had also relaxed the dress code for the lawyers appearing before it.
