The recently established union territories of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) as well as Ladakh will have a common high court from October 31, the State Judicial Academy's Director Rajeev Gupta announced recently.
He stated that 108 central laws will be applicable in the two union territories even as 164 state laws will be repealed, while 166 state laws will continue to be applicable, adding that the existing law and procedure for practice in the high court will remain the same.
He said the legislative assembly will be formed in J&K as a union territory but there will be no legislative assembly in the union territory of Ladakh since it will be directly administered by the union government.
It may be recalled that on August 5, the central government had nullified Article 370 of the constitution, revoking the special status of the state.
The parliament had approved the resolution in this regard and also passed the bill on the bifurcation of the state into two union territories.
Shortly thereafter, on August 9, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the Jammu and Kashmir Re-organisation Act, 2019, bifurcating the two union territories, which will come into existence on October 31.
