Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. Represents BookMyShow in CCI Abuse of Dominance Proceedings
The leading law firm in India, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. advised Big Tree Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. (BookMyShow) in proceedings before the Competition Commission of India (CCI) relating to allegations of abuse of dominance in the market for online intermediation services for booking movie tickets in India.
Background
The proceedings commenced in 2022 when the Competition Commission of India (CCI) directed the Director General to investigate BookMyShow’s commercial arrangements with cinemas. The investigation examined various aspects of the company’s business practices in relation to cinema partners across the country.
CCI’s Findings
In its final order dated 12 March 2026, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) recognised BookMyShow as dominant in the relevant market but found no contravention of the Competition Act, 2002, holding that the company had not discriminated between single-screen cinemas and multiplexes.
The Commission further observed that practices relating to seat reservation, revenue sharing, lock-in periods, and exclusivity arrangements were commercially justifiable and did not result in market foreclosure.
Legal Team
The Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. competition team advising BookMyShow was led by Harman Singh Sandhu (Partner) and Yaman Verma (Partner), along with Raveena Kumari Sethia (Principal Associate) and Pranika Goel (Associate).
Conclusion
With the Competition Commission of India (CCI) closing the proceedings, the decision provides clarity on the assessment of dominance and commercial arrangements in the online movie ticket booking market, reaffirming that commercially justified business practices do not necessarily amount to abuse of dominance under the Competition Act, 2002.
