International law firm Addleshaw Goddard LLP (AG) has advised leading Yorkshire-based accountancy and advisory firm BHP on its deal to join the Sumer Group.

The move, one of the biggest accountancy sector deals of the year, will see BHP bring more than 420 people across its five offices - Sheffield, Leeds, York, Cleckheaton and Chesterfield – to Sumer, a leading mid-market accountancy practice in the UK and Ireland, delivering professional support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The deal is the largest independent practice to join the Sumer national group in 2025.

Paul Medlicott Partner Addleshaw Goddard said,

“BHP is a real powerhouse of the Northern market and we are delighted to help them with this deal, which will allow the firm to pursue its ambitious growth plans as part of Sumer. The accountancy sector has been very active in recent years, and our team is recognised as market leaders for UK and international professional services firms. This is another in a series of the most significant deals in the sector that we have acted on, and we were delighted to bring this experience to bear on behalf of BHP”.

BHP delivers an integrated full-service offering across assurance, advisory, tax and corporate finance, and generated £37 million in annual fee income. Sumer has grown rapidly through both acquisition and organic growth and now has more than 3000 people across over 60 offices, with annual revenue of more than £265m.

Hamish Morrison, Joint Managing Partner at BHP, said, "Joining Sumer Group is a significant milestone in BHP’s continued growth journey. The Addleshaw Goddard team provided outstanding support throughout the transaction with their extensive expertise, experience and client-focused approach evident at every stage, enabling a smooth and successful outcome for BHP."

The Addleshaw Goddard LLP (AG) deal team was led by Paul Medlicott (Partner), and included Daniel Conway (Managing Associate), Ben Davies (Managing Associate), Ted Hendey (Associate), and Matt Campbell (Associate).
