Covington Advised Yellow Door Energy on World’s Largest Rooftop Solar Power Plant in Bahrain
Covington acted as legal advisor to Yellow Door Energy (YDE), a leading sustainable energy project developer in the Middle East and Africa, in its partnership with Foulath Holding (Foulath), an industrial holding company and parent of Bahrain Steel and SULB, to develop a 123-Megawatt-Peak (MWp) solar project in Bahrain.
The 123-MWp site—the largest industrial-scale on-site solar project in the world—will encompass ten rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) plants and four ground-mounted solar PV installations to be financed, designed, built, commissioned, and operated and maintained by YDE. With a total of over 189,900 high-efficiency solar panels spread across 707,000 square meters, the project aims to generate 200 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy in its first year of operation, effectively reducing carbon emissions by 90,000 metric tons.
The first phase of this ground-breaking project—already under development pursuant to a power purchase agreement between YDE and Bahrain Steel—involves the construction of the world’s largest single-site rooftop solar power plant with a capacity of 50 MWp. The plant will comprise 77,000 solar panels installed across a new 262,000-square-meter stockyard shed.
The project is expected to significantly decarbonize Bahrain’s steel production, and contribute to the Kingdom’s Net Zero 2060 target.
The Covington team was led by Marc Norman (Of Counsel) and included Cameron Busch (Associate).
