Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has sent a letter to the Union Ministry of Law and Justice recommending Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor.

Chief Justice Gogoi has gone by the convention to recommend the name of the next senior judger after him as the next Chief Justice of India.

Justice Gogoi, who was sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India on October 3, 2018, will demit office on November 17.

Justice Bobde who is only next to Justice Gogoi in seniority is in line to be the 47th Chief Justice of India, with effect from November 19, 2019.

Justice Bobde, who has a tenure of eight years at the Supreme Court of India, is due to retire on April 23, 2021.

Born on April 24, 1956 in Nagpur, Maharashtra, Justice Bobde completed his graduation at SFS College Nagpur and studied law at Nagpur University in 1978.

Justice Bobde enrolled as an advocate on September 13, 1978, practiced at the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court and became senior advocate in 1998.

He was appointed in the Bombay High Court on March 29, 2000, as an additional judge. On October 16, 2012, he became Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court and on April 12, 2013, he was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court of India.

Incidentally, Justice Bobde comes from a Nagpur-based family of lawyers. His grandfather was a lawyer and his father Arvind Bobde was advocate-general of Maharashtra in 1980 and 1985.

Justice Bobde's elder brother, the late Vinod Arvind Bobde used to be a senior Supreme Court lawyer as well as a constitutional expert.
