The remarks by Rahul Gandhi in the media on the Rafale case verdict were “incorrectly attributed” to the Supreme Court, the apex court has clarified. NEW DELHI: The Congress has said it will provide an explanation to the Supreme Court for party chief Rahul Gandhi's remarks on the Rafale case verdict.

When asked about the SC order on the contempt plea filed by BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi against Rahul Gandhi, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal told reporters, "They (Supreme Court) have sought an explanation. We will give an explanation to them."

The apex court had earlier made it clear that the remarks made by Mr Gandhi in the media on the Rafale case verdict were "incorrectly attributed" to the apex court and directed Mr Gandhi to give his explanation by April 22.

A CJI Ranjan Gogoi-helmed bench said, "We make it clear that the views, observations, findings attributed to this court in the alleged speeches, remarks made by Mr Gandhi to media/public have been incorrectly attributed to this court. We also make it clear that this court had no occasion to make such observation in as much as it was deciding legal admissibility of certain documents which were objected by the attorney general.”

The bench also comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna said, "Having clarified the matter, we deem it appropriate to seek an explanation from Mr Gandhi." The matter will be heard on April 23, the bench said.
