As per the notification of the Supreme Court Registry, the Five-Bench of Supreme Court will hear the long pending matter Ram-Mandir – Babri Masjid case, popularly known as the Ayodhya case on 26th February starting at 10.30 am. The matter has been adjourned consecutively for 3 dates,
a) On Jan 4th, the matter was heard for less than 60 seconds and adjourned to Jan 10, on account of the same not being urgent.
b) On Jan 10th, the matter got adjourned to Jan 29 on account of Justice Lalit recusing from hearing the matter on January 10 this year, since he had appeared earlier in a connected matter.
c) On Jan 29, it got further delayed on account of Justice SA Bobde being unavailable.
After consideration, it is bought out by the notification from the Registry of the Supreme Court that Justice NV Ramana and Justice Lalit will not be part of the Bench. Instead, Justices Ashok Bhushan and Abdul Nazeer will join the existing Bench including CJI Gogoi, Justices Bobde and Chandrachud.
Background of the case – September 2018 verdict decided whether the 1994 Judgement of the Supreme Court in Ismail Farooqui v. UOI should be considered or not. The 1994 Judgement held that offering prayer at religious places is essential or integral of such religious practice, provided the place has a particular significance for that religion.
