SC Court Grants Centre Time Until August 2 To Respond To GHCAA Petition About Delay In Elevating Justice Kureshi

The Supreme Court has given the central government time until August 2 to respond to a petition filed by the Gujarat High Court Advocates Association (GHCAA).
The GHCAA plea seeks to direct the Centre to notify the appointment of Justice A Kureshi as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court as recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that the central government needed two more weeks to respond.
GHCAA counsel Fali S Nariman stated that he would not oppose the request for time, but the central government should tell the court if it has sought the opinion of the Gujarat government in the matter as per the Memorandum of Procedure.
He also stated that the central government has only the role of a 'distinguished communicator' as per the Memorandum of Procedure and Department of Justice is supposed to merely announce the appointment.
The petition GHCAA plea seeks to direct the Centre to notify the appointment of Justice Kureshi as CJ of Madhya Pradesh High Court immediately.
The Centre's selective neglect of Justice Kureshi's file is sought to be highlighted in the petition by pointing out that it has cleared 18 files of judicial appointments after May 10.
The GCHAA has alleged that the centre is sitting over the SC collegium's proposal to make Justice Kureshi the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
