Senior Counsel R S Cheema has sought the Supreme Court's permission to be relieved as Special Public Prosecutor for the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the coal scam case.
Cheema made the request when the matter relating to the repatriation of some ED officials associated with the coal scam case was taken up by the court.
He has cited a lack of public prosecutors to deal with the workload in the case.
He told the court that though the ED has filed 20 complaints in the case, cognizance has been taken only in four cases so far and there is only one prosecutor appointed to assist him with the large number of cases.
However, he has stated that he is not opposed to continue as the Special Public Prosecutor for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
After Cheema’s request, the bench suggested that a panel of prosecutors could be appointed to assist him.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta who represents the ED told the court not to pass any orders for the moment, adding that he would discuss the issue with Cheema.
The court agreed with him and said that orders would be passed on Cheema’s request only in December when the matter would be taken up.
