The Supreme Court is likely to get four new judges after the collegium headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi is believed to have cleared the elevation of Justices V Ramasubramanian, Krishna Murari, S Ravindra Bhat and Hrishikesh Roy.

It may be recalled that CJI Gogoi had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to increase the number of Supreme Court judges, after a bill was passed recently in August, to increase the number the of judges in the Supreme Court from 30 to 33 judges.

Incidentally, the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956 was last amended in 2009 to increase the judges strength from 25 to 30 judges (excluding the CJI).

Presently, the Supreme Court has a sanctioned strength of 30 judges and the Chief Justice of India.

The required number of Constitution Benches to decide important cases were not being formed due to a shortage of judges in the Supreme Court, the CJI had stated.

In a letter to Modi, CJI Gogoi had written that the number of judges in the Supreme Court must be increased so that it can function more efficiently and effectively in order to attain the ultimate goal of rendering timely justice to the litigant public.
