On November 5, the LEGO Group, a Danish toy production company, announced that it has won another copyright infringement lawsuit in China against four Chinese companies.
Ruling in favor of the LEGO Group, the Guangzhou Yuexiu District Court said that the four Chinese companies had “infringed multiple copyrights of the LEGO Group and conducted acts of unfair competition by producing and distributing LEGO building sets.”
The court therefore ordered the companies to immediately cease “producing, selling, exhibiting, or in any way promoting the infringing products.”
In view of the above, the LEGO Group was also awarded $649,735 in damages.
It was in 2017 that the LEGO Group had for the first time succeeded in a copyright claim in China, wherein the group won a landmark case against rival products which it said were almost identical to one of its ranges. The current case is LEGO’s second court victory.
In this regard, CEO of the LEGO Group, Niels B. Christiansen, said, “We believe these decisions are well-founded in the facts and the law, and clearly demonstrate the continued efforts of Chinese authorities to protect intellectual property.”
