A leading London-based visual-effects software company, The Foundry Visionmongers Limited, has sued Adobe in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accusing that Adobe's Firefly Foundry suite of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools violated its ‘Foundry’ trademark rights.
Owned by Roper Technologies, the British company, launched in 1996, complained that Adobe's AI-based content creation software would create consumer confusion. It requested a court order blocking Adobe from using the ‘Foundry’ word and an unspecified amount of monetary damages.
The case is among the many trademark lawsuits related to AI company names or products amid the current AI industrial surge.
Foundry Visionmongers submitted that its software has been used since 2007, in every Academy Award movie for visual effects. And its content-creation software (like Adobe’s), comprised AI capabilities.
The company added that Adobe announced its Firefly Foundry software in 2025, which uses AI to generate text, video, images and other content. The word ‘Foundry’ was likely to confuse consumers.
