Trilegal Advised Resolution Professional On Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process Of SevenHills Healthcare Under The IBC
Trilegal advised Resolution Professional on Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process of SevenHills Healthcare under the IBC
The leading law firm in India, Trilegal advised the Resolution Professional, Mr. Abhilash Lal, in the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) of SevenHills Healthcare, one of India’s longest-running insolvency proceedings, culminating in the approval of a category-wise resolution for the Mumbai Hospital by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) in January 2026.
The matter is among the first cases under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 (IBC) to successfully implement an asset-wise resolution under Regulation 36B(6A). The process addressed complex issues relating to public–private ownership structures and creditor rights, particularly involving disputes with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), which owns the land on which the Mumbai Hospital is situated. The case raised novel questions on asset ownership, public authority rights, and the scope of insolvency law.
Following amendments to the insolvency framework permitting category-wise resolution of assets, SevenHills Healthcare became one of the first CIRPs in India to implement an asset-wise resolution structure. The Visakhapatnam Hospital was successfully resolved in 2024, while the Mumbai Hospital resolution was approved in January 2026 pursuant to a settlement with MCGM.
Trilegal represented the Resolution Professional since the commencement of the CIRP in March 2018, navigating multiple rounds of litigation, regulatory challenges, and process restarts, including proceedings before the NCLT, NCLAT, and the Supreme Court of India. The firm assisted throughout the process, including drafting and issuing key process documents, advising on regulatory and strategic issues, evaluating resolution plans, and successfully defending the process against challenges across various forums. Ernst & Young acted as process advisors to the Resolution Professional.
The Trilegal Corporate team was led by Nishant Parikh (Partner). The Banking & Finance team was led by Kannan Rahul (Partner). The Dispute Resolution team was led by Siddharth Ranade (Partner), supported by Prakshal Jain (Counsel) and Kaazvin Kapadia (Senior Associate). The Restructuring & Insolvency team was led by Karishma Dodeja (Partner), with support from Deepali Verma (Senior Associate) and Nidhi Baid (Associate), Anugya Mukati (Associate), and Renuka Mishra (Associate).
