Fali Sam Nariman


Fali Sam Nariman has practised law for more than seventy years, initially in the High Court of Bombay and since 1972, in New Delhi in the Supreme Court of India. He was appointed as Additional Solicitor, General of India in May 1972, when he moved from Bombay to Delhi. He resigned this office a day after the imposition of the Internal Emergency of 26th June 1975 and was in private practice thereafter. He held prominent positions like was the President of the Bar Association of India (BAI) from 1991 to September 2010, wasVice–Chairman of the International Court of Arbitration of the ICC (International Chamber of Commerce) Paris, from 1989 till December 2005. He was also the President of International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) from October 1994 to May 2002. Presently he is Honorary Chairman of International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA). Mr. Fali Sam Nariman was the Council Member of the Human Rights Institute of the IBA (International Bar Association) in 1995 and Co–Chair of the Human Rights Institute of the IBA from 2001 to December 2004, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), Geneva, from 1995 to 1997 and currently Honorary Member, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), Geneva.

Mr. Fali Sam Nariman was awarded by the President of India in January 1991 the PADMA BHUSHAN “in recognition of distinguished service in the field of jurisprudence.” He was awarded by the President of India the PADMA VIBHUSHAN on 26th January 2007 (India’s 58th Republic Day) in recognition of “exceptional and distinguished services in the field of Public Affairs.”Awarded the “19th Lal Bahadur Shastri Award for Excellence in Public Administration” for 2018. In the INDIAN EXPRESS List of the 100 most powerful Indians in 2019 he was mentioned (at item No.64) as “the conscience keeper of the judiciary, Mr. Fali Sam Nariman is among the country’s most distinguished constitutional lawyers, having appeared in cases that have shaped judicial precedents.” In 2021, in the INDIAN EXPRESS List of the 100 most powerful Indians he is mentioned at item No. 69 as “one of country’s most respected jurists and distinguished constitutional lawyers, Mr. Fali Sam Nariman continues to inspire generations of lawyers and judges with the nuanced views on the most intricate legal issues.” He was also awarded as “Star Lawyer of the Millennium Award 2021” for outstanding contribution and Excellence in the field on Law.

He has authored “India’s Legal System: Can it be Saved?” published by Penguin Books in 2006; (Revised and updated in 2017); “Before Memory Fades… An Autobiography” published by Hay House India in 2010 – the book is presently in its Twenty-Ninth Edition (2022); “The State of the Nation” published by Hay House India in 2013 – the book is presently in its 7th Reprint in 2019; “God Save the Hon’ble Supreme Court” published by Hay House India in 2018 – the book is presently in its 5th Edition in 2020; and “The Arbitration Series” titled “Harmony amidst Disharmony” (Vol.-I - The Indian Framework); and (Vol.-II - The International Framework – published by Hay House India in 2020.
