Sapan Gupta


Sapan Gupta is a Vice President at ArcelorMittal Group. He assumed the role of General Counsel, ArcelorMittal after an elevation from the post of General Counsel at ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel. The firm is one of the world’s largest steel producers and a global leader in industrials and manufacturing. Gupta’s experience spans dispute resolution, banking and finance, bankruptcy, fintech, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, capital markets, industrials and manufacturing and infrastructure. He is an LLM from Harvard Law School and attended the London School of Economics as Chevening Gurukul Scholar. He holds an LLB degree from the University of Delhi after a completing his bachelor’s in Commerce.

Sapan began his career with the Tata Group. From there he moved to ICICI Bank as part of a nimble and entrepreneurial team. The search to learn international best practices took him to HSBC Bank. Next, he found himself working in New York at global law firm Sidley Austin, where he gained considerable international experience. Thereafter he spent some time as Deputy Head of the legal team at Standard Chartered Bank in South Asia, overseeing large capital and equity market transactions. The role led him to assume the position of the first Chief Legal Officer of Bajaj Finance.

Gupta then went on to head a National Practice at law firm Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas as a Senior Partner at the firm.

Often acknowledged for his achievements, Sapan has won awards and recognition from the Chambers, IFLR 1000, The Legal 500 and Asia Law 500. He also served as Chairman of the Mumbai Chapter for Young Indians at the Confederation of Indian Industry.
