Sujit Ghosh


Sujit Ghosh is qualified as a Lawyer from the National Law School of India University, Bangalore (in 1995 i.e. third batch) and has 27 years of experience as a Tax Lawyer. In the formative 15 years of his career, Mr. Ghosh operated as a Tax Consultant employed with some of the Big Five International Tax & Accounting firms like Arthur Andersen and Ernst & Young & boutique Indian Tax Consulting firm like BMR Advisors. In 2010, he left his tax consulting profession and enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi as an Advocate and changed his trajectory from being an advisory tax lawyer to a litigating tax advocate before Courts & Tribunals. In the last 12 years (since enrollment as an Advocate), Mr. Ghosh has argued as lead counsel in several landmark decisions rendered by the Supreme Court, various High Courts such as Delhi, Gujarat, Madras, Calcutta, etc., as also the Customs Excise & Service tax Appellate Tribunal (‘CESTAT’) and Appellate Tribunal for Electricity and other State Electricity Commissions.

Apart from advocacy, as part of his pro-bono initiative, he spends significant time in academics and dissemination of knowledge to the fraternity of tax professionals and devotes substantial time in rendering classroom teaching to High Court Judges, whenever called upon, by the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal. He was also appointed as a Visiting Faculty at the National Law School of India University Bangalore to impart classroom teaching to law students on Goods & Service Tax.

Mr. Ghosh’s sectorial specialization lies in the realm of Oil & Gas, Mining, Power, Infrastructure & Construction sector and regularly prosecutes complex disputes arising under Tax, Regulatory, Tender & Contractual matters as also Judicial Review of State Actions (legislative, quasi-judicial as also administrative). He specializes in Constitutional Law, Indirect Taxation, Contracts, Administrative Law & Electricity law.

He is a regular speaker at various industry fora including FICCI, CII, Assocham, PHDCCI, US India Business Council, Indian National Bar Association, American Bar Association, AIFTP, Tax Sutra, India Infrastructure, Independent Power Producers Association, Infraline Energy and has many published articles to his credit in reputed business dailies such as Wall Street Journal, Halsbury’s Laws, Financial Express, Economic Times, Hindu Business Line, DNA, Business Standard etc
