Delhi High Court Orders Otts, Producers To Include Accessibility Features In Movies
Delhi High Court Orders Otts, Producers To Include Accessibility Features In Movies
Delhi High Court Directs OTT Platforms and Film Producers to Ensure Accessibility Features for Visually and Hearing Impaired
The Delhi High Court ordered over-the-top (OTT) platforms and film producers to incorporate accessibility features like audio description and same-language captioning in movies. The court's decision applies to several movies, including "The Buckingham Murders," "Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3," "Shaitan," "Article 370," and "Kaluva." Justice Sachin Datta directed movie producers to ensure that accessibility features are included in all future releases on OTT platforms at the time of release.
It has been mandated that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) establish regulations on this matter as soon as possible. The case will be heard by the court on July 17, 2025. Although some films have included accessibility elements, the petitioners contended that producers need to make sure that this is done at the time of distribution. The MIB has stated that regulations are being implemented, however at present, only an advisory is in place.
The OTT platforms, including Netflix, Disney+, Hotstar and Prime Video have been directed to comply with the court's order.
In this case the petitioners were represented by Mr. Rahul Bajaj, Advocate. Meanwhile the respondent was represented by Mr. Saikrishna Rajgopal, Advocate.
