Former Supreme Court Justice Dinesh Maheshwari Is Chairperson Of Law Commission
Elevated to the top court in January 2019, he served as a judge till his retirement in May 2023
Former Supreme Court judge Justice Dinesh Maheshwari has been appointed Chairperson of the 23rd Law Commission of India.
Advocate Hitesh Jain and Professor DP Verma have been appointed as full-time members of the Commission.
The Ministry of Law and Justice announced that their tenure will last till 31 August 2027.
Justice Maheshwari practiced as a lawyer for over two decades in Rajasthan before being elevated to the bench of the Rajasthan High Court in 2004. He later served as a judge of the Allahabad High Court, Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court and Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court.
Jain is the Managing Partner of Parinam Law Associates and Vice-President of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Mumbai. A practicing lawyer for over two decades with experience in civil, criminal, commercial and constitutional matters, he acted as a Special Counsel for the State of Maharashtra in the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court.
Professor Verma has been a full-time member of the 22nd Law Commission of India. He has over four decades of experience in legal education, especially in public international law, jurisprudence and human rights law. He served as Additional Director (Research & Training), National Judicial Academy from 2017 to 2020.
The Law Commission is a non-statutory body constituted by the Central government.
As per the terms of reference, the 23rd Law Commission is tasked with identifying obsolete laws. It has to recommend which laws must be repealed or amended. It will adopt measures to improve access to justice and judicial administration.
