Akin Advised Nippon Steel Corporation On Its historic Merger With United States Steel Corporation
Akin advised Nippon Steel Corporation on its historic merger with United States Steel Corporation
Akin advised Nippon Steel Corporation on its landmark merger with United States Steel Corporation, a transformative deal expected to drive major investments in U.S. steel manufacturing and protect or create over 100,000 jobs across the country.
The transaction involved navigating highly complex regulatory, policy, and litigation issues across Washington, D.C. and beyond. The matter was led by Stephen Kho (Partner, International Trade) and Geoff Verhoff (Senior Advisor, Lobbying & Public Policy).
Akin's cross-practice team supporting the transaction included Hunter Bates (Partner), Brian Pomper (Partner), Scott Parven (Partner), Ed Pagano (Partner), Chris Treanor (Partner), Sean D’Arcy (Partner), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (Partner), Hans Rickhoff (Partner), and Jeff McMillen (Partner), all from the lobbying & public policy practice.
The broader advisory team also comprised Virgil Miller (Senior Advisor), Joe Donnelly (Senior Consultant), Joe Fawkner, Zachary Paulsen, Roger Murry, and Jose Borjon (Senior Policy Advisors); Josh Teitelbaum and Reggie Babin (Senior Counsel); Kevin Paulsen (Counsel), Ryan Ellis (Consultant), and Christina Barone and Richard Coppola (Policy Advisors).
On international trade matters, the team included Jon Poling (Partner), Yujin McNamara (Partner), Katherine Padgett (Partner), Christian Davis (Partner), Sally Laing (Partner), and Devin Sikes (Partner), supported by Sydney Stringer (Counsel), Atsushi Oshima (Counsel), Sarah Kirwin (Counsel), and Julia Eppard (Counsel). Additional contributions came from Hal Shapiro (Consultant), Rachel Polan (Associate), and Shannon Jackenthal (Associate).
From the congressional investigations and competition law practices, key advisors included Karen Christian (Co-Leader, Congressional Investigations), Joe DiPiero (Counsel), and Gorav Jindal (Co-Leader, Antitrust/Competition).
This comprehensive effort reflects Akin’s deep bench strength across practice areas and its ability to coordinate high-impact, cross-border transactions with significant public policy and regulatory components.
