White & Case Advised Stockholm Exergi On Financing Of One Of The World’s Largest Carbon Capture Facilities

White & Case advised Stockholm Exergi on financing of one of the world’s largest carbon capture facilities
White & Case LLP advised Stockholm Exergi on securing the financing required to build Beccs Stockholm, one of the world’s largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities. The investment for the project is valued at 13 billion SEK, backed by long-term commitments for unsecured loans that not only fund the facility but also provide Stockholm Exergi with additional working capital.
The facility will be developed at the bio-combined heat and power plant in Värtahamnen, which already delivers sustainable electricity and heating across Stockholm through a 3,000-kilometer-long district heating network. By integrating carbon capture and storage of biogenic CO₂, the project aims to deliver permanent negative emissions and further enhance climate benefits.
Stockholm Exergi, owned by the City of Stockholm and a consortium of European pension funds including APG, Alecta, PGGM, Keva, and AXA, is Sweden’s leading district heating company and a pioneer in circular energy solutions. This CCS project marks a strategic move to become the EU’s largest provider of permanent negative emissions.
The White & Case team was led by Katie Hicks (Partner), Elizaveta Bazarova (Partner), and Henrik Wireklint (Partner), with support from Michael Bark-Jones (Partner), Ryan Sarsfield (Associate), Luca Credentino (Associate), Azamat Gaysenov (Partner), Ashwati Venkatesh (Associate), Alexander Berlin-Jarhamn (Associate), Vilhelm Oxhammar (Associate), and Carin Sundh (Associate).
