Ashurst Advised EWEC And Tadweer Group On Power Project In Abu Dhabi
Ashurst Advised EWEC And Tadweer Group On Power Project In Abu Dhabi
Global law firm provided advisory services to Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) and Tadweer Group on the structuringf, procurement, and financing for Abu Dhabi's inaugural waste-to-energy (WtE) facility. EWEC oversees water and electricity supply co-ordination across UAE, while Tadweer Group is recognized as Abu Dhabi's leader in sustainable waste management.
The project encompasses the financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of a cutting-edge WtE facility utilizing advanced moving grate technology. This facility aims to convert municipal solid waste into electricity via a high-efficiency steam turbine generator set. Upon completion, it will stand as one of the largest WtE facilities in the region with a projected annual processing capacity of 900,000 tonnes of waste. This output is expected to power approximately 52,500 households in the UAE and potentially reduce CO2 equivalent emissions by up to 1.1 million tonnes annually.
The team from Ashurst was led by Partners Luke Robottom and Grant Batten and supported by Partners Natasha Kavanagh and Matthew Wood, Senior Associate Shruthilaya Baker, Associate Rohit Tularam and Trainees Bogdan Artemov and Brakemi Ebi-Ogbomah. The wider team included Partner Kerion Ball, Senior Associate Alec Peschlow and Associate Glenn Morrow.
Lead Partner Luke Robottom commented, “We are delighted to have been able to support EWEC and Tadweer on the procurement of this project, the first WtE project to be developed in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and a landmark project reflecting Abu Dhabi's commitment to move towards a sustainable economy.”
