Eversheds Sutherland advised Systra on acquisition of Subterra
It is a part of the firm’s growth strategy
The global full-service law firm, Eversheds Sutherland has advised Systra, one of the world’s largest international engineering and consulting groups, on the acquisition of Subterra.
Subterra is a Spanish engineering company that specializes in subway works, including tunnels, stations and transportation systems with a significant presence in Chile, Colombia and Peru.
Systra has been present in the Spanish market for 20 years, particularly relating to the modernization of the Bilbao metro and high-speed line projects.
Recently, Systra completed the acquisition of two companies dedicated to the design of tunnels and underground structures and subway structures in Australia (Bamser), and Spain (Subterra). The acquisitions reinforce its position as a world leader in the field of complex tunnels, following the 2021 acquisition of SWS Engineering, a leading Italy-based engineering firm, which also specializes in tunnel designs.
Subterra will bring extensive experience to projects around the world. The acquisition will also provide Systra the opportunity to continue its development in Spain and Portugal, where the transport and construction markets are being boosted by the European Union’s recovery plan. It also enables the group to develop its partnerships with Spanish entrepreneurs and world leaders in the transport market.
The advice in several jurisdictions was led by Eversheds Sutherland’s Madrid corporate partner Carlos Pemán. He was supported by María Ramalle Quiñones, (corporate, legal director), María Isabel González Ojeda (corporate, senior associate), and Mercedes Olmedo González (corporate, associate).
