Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr Announces Phetheni Nkuna as Chief Operating Officer Across Africa
The full-service law firm primarily focused on the African continent, Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr Inc has announced the appointment of Phetheni Nkuna as Chief Operating Officer, effective 1 April 2026, marking a significant step in strengthening the firm’s operational leadership across Africa.
In her new role, Nkuna will oversee operations across the firm’s offices in South Africa, Kenya, and Namibia, supporting the continued integration of its African operations. The appointment underscores the firm’s strategic focus on driving innovation, transformation, and operational excellence in an evolving legal landscape.
Phetheni Nkuna has emerged as a key figure within the firm’s leadership, playing a central role in shaping operational strategy, advancing a people-first agenda, and supporting client and business development initiatives. Her contributions have extended to enhancing client engagement and market intelligence, particularly in relation to innovation and developments across the African legal sector.
Her progression within the firm reflects a broader strategic vision aligned with sustainable and integrated growth across jurisdictions. Known for her forward-looking leadership approach, Nkuna has been instrumental in fostering a culture that empowers talent, promotes professional development, and supports long-term organisational success.
Prior to her elevation, Nkuna served as Director of Executive Management, where she worked closely with the firm’s leadership in advancing key strategic priorities and managing multiple operational portfolios. She initially joined the firm as a Director in the Employment Law practice, bringing with her strong legal and business acumen.
Academically, Nkuna holds LLB and LLM degrees, along with a Certificate in Advanced Labour Law and a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration. She also holds a Master of Business Administration from the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), reflecting a strong foundation in both legal and business disciplines.
Beyond her operational responsibilities, Nkuna is actively involved in mentorship and initiatives aimed at advancing women in the workplace. She has contributed to building inclusive programs that support professional growth, including mentorship structures, maternity coaching, and initiatives focused on employee wellbeing and psychological safety.
Commenting on the appointment, Brent Williams, Chief Executive Officer of the firm, noted that Nkuna brings a unique combination of legal insight and operational expertise, adding that her leadership will play a critical role in advancing the firm’s strategic priorities across its African offices.
“Phetheni has a deep and authentic understanding of what it means to practise law, combined with strong business, financial, and operational acumen. She has already demonstrated her ability to think strategically, lead decisively, and drive meaningful progress across the firm. I am confident that, in her role as COO, she will continue to play a critical part in advancing CDH’s strategic priorities across our offices in South Africa, Kenya and Namibia.”
Nkuna’s appointment represents a natural progression in her leadership journey and is expected to further strengthen the firm’s ability to deliver integrated, high-quality services while supporting its continued growth across the continent.
