Discovery Green Appoints Mathaabe Scott As Senior Legal Counsel To Accelerate Renewable Energy Initiatives
Discovery Green Appoints Mathaabe Scott as Senior Legal Counsel to Accelerate Renewable Energy Initiatives
The Discovery Green platform, established in recent years by South African financial services organisation Discovery to position the country as a global leader in renewable energy, has strengthened its legal team by appointing talented lawyer Mathaabe Scott as Senior Legal Counsel.
Scott, who has previously worked with elite global law firms including White & Case and A&O Shearman, brings extensive experience in renewable energy, infrastructure, and natural resources law. “Stepping into this role feels both purposeful and exciting,” shared Scott.
I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Senior Legal Counsel at Discovery Green. Stepping into this role feels both purposeful and exciting. I look forward to the work ahead and the opportunities to grow, collaborate and add value.
Most recently an associate in White & Case’s Energy, Infrastructure, Project and Asset Finance team, Scott is a graduate of the University of Johannesburg, where she completed her LLB with distinction. During her time at university, she was among the top two students in the Faculty of Law and a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society. Scott also gained experience as a commercial law tutor and law library assistant, building a foundation for her career in complex, high-value renewable energy and infrastructure projects.
Discovery Green, part of the multinational Discovery Group operating across 22 countries, develops some of South Africa's largest private-sector renewable energy projects, helping corporate, industrial, and medium-sized businesses replace up to 90% of their electricity consumption with cleaner energy. Scott’s in-house role will support these initiatives, providing legal guidance on project development, financing, and regulatory compliance, directly contributing to South Africa’s energy transition.
With her blend of private practice expertise and commitment to sustainable energy solutions, Scott’s appointment underscores Discovery Green’s strategic focus on driving the country’s decarbonisation efforts and expanding access to solar and wind resources across South Africa.
Discovery Green is a renewable energy platform launched in September 2023 by South African financial services group Discovery Limited. The platform operates by "wheeling" electricity—transporting power from utility-scale wind and solar plants across South Africa to businesses via the national grid.
