Hogan Lovells Restructures International Arbitration Leadership Team with Eye on Asia-Pacific Market
Emerson Holmes, a leading international arbitration lawyer, has joined the International Arbitration (IA) Leadership Team of Hogan Lovells.
Holmes had joined the firm from King & Spalding’s Singapore office along with Patrick McPherson and Randall Walker (both in Dubai), last year. Holmes will be mainly responsible for implementing Hogan Lovells’ strategy for its IA practice in South/SE Asia and the Middle East.
To his credit, Holmes has been associated with some of the biggest infrastructure projects in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East markets, such as power plants, petrochemical plants, liquefied natural gas facilities, mines, railways, roads, and airports.
Holmes complements a global leadership team of Hogan Lovells which has a strong widespread representation across multiple sectors and regions, in both commercial and investment treaty arbitrations. The multicultural leadership team includes Oliver Armas, Global Head of IA - New York; Kieron O’Callaghan, Deputy Global Head of IA – London; Markus Burgstaller, Partner – London (Investment Treaty and Public International Law); Dr Inken Knief, Partner – Munich (Europe (CEE) region; James Kwan, Partner – Hong Kong (Greater China region); and Maria Eugenia Ramirez, Partner – Miami (LatAm region).
“It’s an exciting time to be joining the International Arbitration Leadership Team and I look forward to working with James Kwan and other members of the team to further build out our IA offering in AsiaPac, as well as continuing to expand our presence in the Middle East which I view as a crucial market. We know that the Middle East and Asia are important strategic hubs for many of our clients, and I plan to spend a considerable amount of time in both regions, especially in Singapore,” Holmes said.
Oliver (Ollie) Armas took over as Head of Hogan Lovells’ IA Leadership Team in 2020. Under his tenure, the firm’s practice has expanded further, building on its unique position among clients as the first choice for cross-border disputes involving parties from multiple jurisdictions.
Armas commented: ”With our AsiaPac caseload growing considerably, it makes strategic sense to bring Emerson, with his years of construction and energy sector experience in the region, into our leadership team. Emerson also brings extensive experience in the Middle East, another focus for our practice. We continue to expand in markets where our clients are active, and Emerson will be key to helping us achieve those goals, especially in Singapore and the Middle East.”
