Spiros Drosos Joins Covington’s Brussels Office, Strengthens EU Life Sciences Litigation And Regulatory Practice

Spiros Drosos Joins Covington’s Brussels Office, Strengthens EU Life Sciences Litigation and Regulatory Practice
Spiros Drosos has joined Covington's Life Sciences Practice based in the firm’s Brussels office, bolstering its European regulatory and litigation capabilities.
Spiros served as the Head of Litigation at the European Medicines Agency (EMA) between 2020 and 2025. As the Agency’s lead litigator, Spiros represented the EMA in all major cases before the EU General Court and the Court of Justice (CJEU), covering complex regulatory issues including data exclusivity, clinical trial transparency, orphan drug market exclusivity, regulatory actions, conflicts of interest, and legal intersections between pharmaceutical and competition law.
In addition to litigation, he played a key advisory role, offering strategic guidance on regulatory compliance through the full lifecycle of medicines and medical devices—from early clinical development and marketing authorizations to post-approval monitoring and enforcement.
Over the past five years, Spiros served as the exclusive legal advisor to the Committee on Orphan Medicinal Products, while also advising all EMA committees on EU law, public law, and administrative compliance matters.
Mike Labson, a co-chair of Covington's Life Sciences practice, said,
“Spiros further strengthens our leadership in EU regulatory and litigation matters as they affect companies in the life sciences sector. Drawing on more than a decade of frontline experience at the European Medicines Agency, Spiros combines the experience of a seasoned litigator with the strategic insight of a senior regulatory advisor. His deep understanding of EMA processes and EU law will be a decisive asset for life sciences clients navigating regulatory complexity.”
Peter Bogaert, co-chair of Covington’s European Food, Drug & Device practice, said,
“We are very excited to welcome Spiros to the team. In an era of accelerating legislative reform, increasing regulatory complexity, and rigorous enforcement across Europe, Spiros’ expertise empowers clients to anticipate change, ensure compliance, and thrive in an evolving market.”
Grant Castle, a co-chair of Covington's Life Sciences practice and co-chair of the firm's European Food, Drug & Device Practice, said,
“His comprehensive understanding of the internal workings of the EMA and its Committees, and how they impact the product lifecycle – for both drugs and associated medical devices and diagnostics – enables him to anticipate regulatory challenges and craft long-term regulatory compliance strategies. This hands-on experience will be invaluable to our clients, particularly those operating across jurisdictions.”
Spiros Drosos said,
“In the life sciences industry, Covington’s name is synonymous with integrity, expertise and collegiality. I am very excited to be joining this world-class team, and look forward to bringing my expertise to bear when it comes to a variety of regulatory, litigation and policy issues affecting companies in the life sciences and medical device sectors.”
Spiros holds an LL.M. in European and International Law from the European University Institute (Florence, Italy), an LL.M. in Environmental Law and Policy from University College London, and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Athens Law School. He is admitted to practice in Greece and Brussels and previously served as a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley School of Law. He is fluent in English, German, French, and Greek.
