South Korea Fines Google And Apple Units Over Location Data Law Violations
The South Korean units of Google and Apple were fined for alleged Violations of Location Data Collection Laws, as Announced by the Telecom Regulator on Wednesday.
According to the Korean Communications Commission (KCC), Google's Korean unit received a fine of 3 million won (US$2,180) for reportedly not disclosing its Policy on Location Data.
Apple's Korean unit was also fined 210 million won for allegedly collecting location data without consent and failing to disclose its location data policy, among other infringements, the commission stated.
The fines were part of a broader enforcement action where the commission penalized a total of 188 firms, including Google and Apple's Korean units, for violations of the Act on the Protection and Use of Location Information.
These measures followed regular inspections conducted under the revised location information protection act of 2022.
"Location information is a critical asset for enhancing user convenience and fostering the development of innovative industries. However, we must also prioritize the protection of individuals' privacy and social security in its utilization," remarked KCC Chairman Kim Hong-il.
