UAE Ministry Of Economy Unveils Green IP Roadmap To Boost Sustainability And Innovation

UAE Ministry Of Economy Unveils Green IP Roadmap To Boost Sustainability And Innovation
The Ministry of Economy has introduced an innovative three-month roadmap for "green intellectual property (IP)," aimed at promoting innovation, accelerating technology localization, and driving initiatives in the new economy, environmental sustainability, and circular economy sectors.
This initiative aligns with the UAE’s vision of transitioning to a circular economy while boosting the competitiveness and growth of the country’s intellectual property landscape. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the UAE Circular Economy Council, emphasized the nation’s successful implementation of high-quality initiatives in intellectual property, which have positioned it as a cornerstone of a robust, sustainable economy. He credited this achievement to the foresight of the UAE’s leadership.
Al Marri noted that the new roadmap’s primary goal is to raise awareness of the importance of green technology and innovation in delivering high-quality, community-focused products and services. Additionally, the roadmap aims to make the UAE a more attractive hub for sustainable technologies. These efforts are in line with the 'We the UAE 2031' vision, which aims to establish the country as one of the most innovative in the world.
“The launch of this year’s innovation month makes the new roadmap for green IP especially significant,” Al Marri stated. “To achieve the objectives of this roadmap, we will collaborate with regional environmental stakeholders and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which will create more opportunities for inventors and creators to develop sustainable innovations across key economic sectors.”
Strengthening UAE’s Sustainable Economy Initiatives To further explain the roadmap’s objectives, the Ministry of Economy held a media conference at its Dubai headquarters. Abdulla Ahmed Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, emphasized that sustainability has always been a central element of the UAE’s cultural heritage and national development strategy. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to funding initiatives that promote sustainability across various economic sectors, supporting the UAE’s goal of fostering a balanced economy that preserves natural resources for future generations.
Al Saleh commented: “The new green IP roadmap aims to encourage individuals, organizations, and businesses to adopt cutting-edge technology and digital solutions for developing sustainable goods and services. This strategy will also facilitate collaborations with academic institutions and research centers to integrate intellectual property into sustainable concepts and protect eco-friendly innovations.”
He also pointed out that the roadmap is key to driving innovation and creativity within sustainable sectors, enhancing the UAE’s global competitiveness, and improving its position in global rankings such as the Global Innovation Index (GII). The UAE consistently performs well in innovation rankings and maintains a strong regional and international presence in this regard.
Key Goals of the Green IP Roadmap Al Saleh highlighted the key objectives of the newly introduced roadmap, including launching a program to expedite patent registrations for eco-friendly and sustainable technologies. The initiative aims to increase the share of patent registrations for environmentally friendly inventions to 8% of all patents filed nationwide.
With a growing number of patent applications approximately 3,622 in 2024 the roadmap will also strengthen legal frameworks to protect patents related to environmental sustainability. Al Saleh emphasized the UAE’s achievements in creating a competitive legal environment that supports intellectual property rights, including laws on copyrights, trademarks, industrial property rights, and other legal protections.
According to the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2024, the UAE ranked first in the region and remains a global leader in innovation and intellectual property protection.
The Ministry of Economy’s new green IP roadmap represents a significant advancement in the UAE’s sustainability-driven economic model and further establishes the country as a global leader in green innovation and intellectual property development.
