Am Law 100 firms to cover travel for abortion care
76 Am Law 100 firms are located in the states that prohibit or restrict abortions, according to research conducted by Above The Law
According to Above The Law, at least 15 law firms with offices in states with abortion bans have stated their willingness to reimburse medical expenses abroad.
There are a number of firms in that category, such as Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, Cozen O'Connor, Dorsey & Whitney, Hogan Lovells, Kirkland & Ellis, Mayer Brown, McDermott Will & Emery, Morgan Lewis, Morrison Foerster, Proskauer, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, Ropes & Gray, Seyfarth Shaw, Simpson Thacher & Merrit and award-based, Hoffman Appeltoposing, Ropes, Retiredhaniaity; and more.
According to the Am Law 100, 76 firms are located in states that restrict abortion rights, either outright prohibiting abortions or limiting abortion access.
Overturning Roe v. Wade and ending women's constitutional right to reproductive freedom has been the outcome of six US Supreme Court Justices, three of whom were appointed by former president Donald Trump. States will now decide their own rights regarding abortion.
Many firms reported analyzing the situation but did not commit to covering travel expenses. Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner's spokesperson told Above The Law: "Our colleagues' well-being continues to be our top priority, which is why we are exploring policies that may make it impossible for them to claim health care services in their state of residence.
According to the American Bar Association, the association supports reproductive choices to the fullest extent possible.
It could adversely affect a pregnant woman's physical and mental health, her life, and the lives of her family if this choice is restricted," ABA president Reginald Turner declared on Friday.
