Tamil Nadu files for GI tag for Matti Banana
In the latest move by Kanniyakumari Banana and Horticulture Farmers Producer Company Limited in Tamil Nadu, Geographical Indication (GI) application has been filed for Matti banana that is grown and cultivated in many parts of Nagercoil and Padmanabhapuram division in Tamil Nadu
The application initiated by the above applicant was facilitated by MSME Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre and NABARD's Madurai Agri-Business Incubation Forum and filed by P. Sanjay Gandhi, nodal officer, Geographical Indications Registration Products, Government of Tamil Nadu.
Matti Banana is an AA-type medium-sized plant that takes around 15 months to mature from planting to harvest stage having yellowish-green leaves. Matti Banana is a fruit that is used as baby food and also has medicinal properties which help in improving health. Moreover, the details in the application mentioned that Matti is used for curing Jaundice by the tribes of Western Ghats.
