Ugochukwu Obi is a Partner and Head of the Emerging Technologies, Fintech & Private Equity Practice Group, recognized for his strategic leadership in the fast-evolving technology and financial sectors. With over a decade of specialized experience, Ugo offers expert legal guidance on cutting-edge technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Before joining the firm in 2015, Ugo spent nine years as in-house counsel at two leading Nigerian banks, rising to Regional Legal Manager. This experience sharpened his skills in transactional law, regulatory compliance, and financial industry regulations. Ugo also received advanced ICT law training in India, enhancing his expertise at the nexus of fintech, banking, and technology law.
A graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Ugo holds a Master’s degree in Oil and Gas Law from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. Since being admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 2004, he has played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s fintech legal framework. Notably, in 2019, he was appointed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to a committee responsible for implementing Nigeria’s capital market fintech roadmap. Ugo was instrumental in drafting the SEC Crowdfunding Rules released in 2021, demonstrating his influence in advancing regulatory innovation.
